Introduction to Surfing
PE 157.01, PE 157.02, PE 157.03, and PE 157.04
In 2003 Pepperdine University contracted Malibu Makos Surf Club to teach a one unit PE class in surfing. Introduction to Surfing became the “best class on campus!” Classes fill almost instantly when registration begins! The programs focuses on the fundamentals of surfing and ocean safety as outlined below.

Goals
The goals for this course are to enable students to get the basic knowledge and enjoyment of surfing and a general understanding of ocean safety. The class focuses on learning the local surf areas so that students get to know the different style of waves and conditions. By the end of the course students should be able to surf confidently without instruction and be proficient in various aspects of ocean safety.
Attendance
Each class meets once per week for 15 weeks. Students should try to attend all classes and participate to the best of their abilities. They are allowed to make-up/miss two classes during the course. They must also complete the swim test, exam, and assignment.
Bad Conditions
In the event that the conditions are such that we deem class should be cancelled students are notified in advance via email or text.
Equipment
All equipment is provided by the Malibu Makos Surf Club. In addition, students should bring a towel and warm clothing.
Location
The class meets at Zuma Beach Lifeguard Tower 16
Examinations
An examination and assignment will be given during the course. Both must be completed to get course credit. A passing grade is 75% or higher.
Assignment– specifics of the assignment will be given later in class and it will be due in December
Swim – four consecutive 25 yard laps in the Pepperdine University pool
